NOLA Sampling: Old Absenthe House

Highlights of our culinary adventure

—Suzann Balog, New Orleans, LA

If you’re looking for something “better” than a hurricane and want a bit of history to go with it, check out John Lafitte’s Old Absenthe House in the French Quarter. You’ll immediately note it has a completely different vibe from the bead throwing, plastic vessels of sweet, cheap alcohol carrying party crowd that fills the street of today’s Bourbon Street.  Here you can get a decent scotch or a true absinthe specialty drink and maybe a visit from a ghost or two (or is that just the absenthe playing tricks)!

Be sure to leave a calling card stapled to the wall and appreciate the Old Absinthe House’s motto:

“EVERYONE YOU HAVE KNOWN OR EVER WILL KNOW, EVENTUALLY ENDS UP AT THE OLD ABSINTHE HOUSE”

The Mata Hari Absenthe, lit on fire!
