Missing Greece
Local Foodie Adventures
— Williamsburg, VA
Have you ever loved a trip so much that you immediately try to find the same food, wine, or feeling that you had when you were there, but now you’re here, and wanting to have it again?!? Well, that is how we felt about Greece – and we’ve been on the hunt ever since our return for a restaurant that has some of the same things or a market that carries some of the products to recreate a dish at home. We got lucky twice this week - one with a trip to Williamsburg VA and having a vacay kind of lunch at the Saras family owned and operated, Kephi Greek Kitchen @kephi_greekkitchen (you get an instant feeling of traditional Greek culture as you pass by the shelves of olive oil and bakery on your way to your table – with a glance at the very cool blue vibe at the bar, you wonder if you should sit there instead…maybe next time). We started with a perfect dry white, the Costa Lazaridi “Chateau Julia” Assyrtico (so good, now need to search Total Wine to have that again!) paired with a perfectly flamed Saganaki and the sample meze of Taramasalata (Greek Caviar Dip), Melitzanosalata (Grilled Eggplant Dip), and Tzatziki along with Dolmades, Olives, and Grilled Pita – this combo was SO good we should have stopped right there! We tried a couple other appetizers but on our way out simply had to go for the olive oil tasting – so glad we did! It was great chatting with Demitrios Saras, one of the three son’s who loves working the family business, and hearing about their olive farm in Greece where all these oils come from – so of course we had to get some to take home!!
The second find of the week was the elusive Barley Rusks for making the Dakos Salad that I had nearly every day during our Big Fat Greek Anniversary Trip – at Nick’s International Food market/wholesaler in RVA – can’t wait to get the rest of the ingredients and do my best to recreate at home!
